Howard Jacobson, long-time Classics faculty member, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, at the age of 83. A memorial service was held in Silver Springs, Maryland on Friday, November 24. He was a loving and devoted husband, brother, father, father in law, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  Respected scholar of the classics and a professor at the University of Illinois since 1968, he won acclaim from his colleagues and his discipline's highest honor, the Goodwin Award.  Conservative in temperament, liberal in weltanschauung, he was a dedicated Orthodox Jew and Zionist.  His high standards in academia and ethical behavior left a permanent imprint on those who knew and loved him- family, students, and friends.

Professor Jacobson is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Elaine; his brothers Kenny and Shaye; his children Michael and Rachel (Strong), Dan and Dassi, Joel and Heather, and David and Lauren (Statman); grandchildren Adam and Shayna; Teeli and Josh (Brull), Roni, Yehuda, Tani, Noam, and Elihai; Tamar and Tani (Levisohn), Avital, Sam, Ben; and Jack and Sam; and great grandchildren Itai and Yair.
